First Aid

Our First Aid Team is made up of caring, trained staff who are here to support students whenever they feel unwell or have an injury in school. They provide calm, practical help and always aim to make children feel safe, listened to and looked after.

While our team is highly skilled in first aid, they are not medically qualified nurses or doctors, so they can’t diagnose medical conditions. What they can do is offer appropriate first‑aid treatment, monitor students, and let families know when further advice from a healthcare professional may be needed.

Medication stored in the first aid room

We can store medication securely for your child in the first aid room and, if you wish, administer (or monitor for an older child):

  • for minor ailments such as headaches/period pain (i.e. paracetamol/ibuprofen) (PLEASE NOTE: we cannot administer more than the recommended dose on the box, for the students age, without written instructions from a GP/hospital).
  • for a prescribed medication that needs to be taken during the school day (prescribed medicines must have the pharmacy label with clear instructions and the students name).

All medication must be in the original packaging and clearly labelled with your child’s full name and year group. It is important that you ensure the medication is kept in-date and the supply is stocked up after use.

Supporting students with medial conditions (IHCP)

We work closely with parents and carers to make sure that every child receives appropriate support while in school. If your child has a medical condition, please make sure we have a completed healthcare plan form (a copy is available from office). This allows us to support your child in school and when taking part in trips or activities.

If there have been any changes to your child’s medical condition, please let the school have an updated copy of the healthcare plan.

Healthcare plans should be reviewed each school year, where possible. Please let the school have an up-to-date copy of your child’s healthcare plan.

Important information regarding student injuries or mobility conditions

If your child has an injury or mobility condition that may make them vulnerable when using stairs or moving through busy corridors, please inform us as soon as possible. Once we receive this information, we will follow up to assess whether a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) needs to be put in place. This process ensures the safety of your child and others on site.

If a PEEP is necessary, your child will not be able to attend school until a short questionnaire and risk assessment have been completed with a parent or carer.
