Winterbourne Academy

Olympus

Welcome to Winterbourne Academy, the largest secondary school in South Gloucestershire and part of the Olympus Academy Trust. In May 2022, we achieved 'Good' in our Ofsted report and since then we have worked with all stakeholders to setting our vision for our next chapter, developing shared school values of community, equity and ambition.  We aim to build an inclusive, welcoming school where all belong and can achieve their best.

We are academically ambitious for all our young people and are proud of our exam results, with 54% of Year 11 students gaining at least one Grade 7 to 9 in 2025 and 98% gaining at least 5 GCSEs. However, grades alone are not enough; we also prepare our learners to be successful in the changing working world, as citizens and individuals. We do this by offering extensive enrichment opportunities and embedding our PRIDE
character values of Participation, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Excellence throughout academy life.

Our aim is to empower each child for their future, providing a stable, rich, and warm environment where we can both support and challenge. Students of all abilities can enjoy learning whilst developing both character and independence, leaving the school with the qualifications and confidence to reach their potential in all aspects of life.

Update: School reopening on Friday 26thJune

Please note that school will reopen tomorrow (Friday).

The current forecast indicates that there are no Met Office weather warnings in place for our area. However, we remain mindful of the cumulative impact of the high temperatures over the past few days and have carefully considered how best to support both learners and staff as we return.

We recognise that the recent temperatures may have affected children’s sleep, and some may be feeling more tired than usual. As a result, the school may take a flexible approach to the day to support a calmer environment.

To help ensure everyone remains safe and comfortable:

  • Activities requiring vigorous physical exertion will not take place, and any outdoor activity will be kept to shaded areas where possible
  • Decisions will be made about whether it is appropriate for children to be outside at breaktimes and lunchtime and alternatives for these periods may be found
  • Risk assessments will continue to be reviewed and updated for learners, staff and the school environment

We would appreciate your support in ensuring that:

  • Children bring plenty of water to stay well hydrated throughout the day
  • Sunscreen is applied before they come into school
  • Hats are worn where appropriate
  • Blazers, jumpers and ties are not required.
  • Tailored shorts are permitted. Alternatively, and as per previous communications, students may wear black or navy sports shorts that are just above the knee and mirror the general style and length of the school uniform shorts.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your understanding and support over the past few days. We are very grateful for the kind messages we have received regarding the decision to close schools during the period of highest risk.

If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
