Winterbourne Academy Students Celebrate Success

Students at Winterbourne Academy have excelled in achieving some fantastic results in 2023.  Students deserve particular credit for their achievements in what has been a challenging national climate where they were sitting formal external examinations for the first time. 

Students gained some very strong individual results with two students achieving A* grades in all 4 of their subjects and with a wide range of excellent destinations, including students with places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Results at the highest level were impressive with 22% of grades at A level at A* to A and 45% of vocational grades achieving Distinction* or Distinction.  Subject standout performances included 67% A*-A in Spanish, 63% A*-A in Computing, 53% A*-A in Maths, 64% A*-A in Further Maths, and 45% A*-A in Physics.  

Headteacher Jenny Cartwright said “The determination and resilience of these students over the past few years has been inspiring to watch. Teachers and students have worked hard together to achieve these good results in unprecedented circumstances. I am proud to see them progress to their next steps, whether this be university, apprenticeships or employment.”

Tracy Cheesbrough, Assistant Headteacher for KS5 said: “It has been a true privilege to work with so many of the Year 13 students over the past two years. I have seen them grow into mature, successful young adults and I hope all will be very proud of their achievements. I know they have bright futures ahead!”

Some standout performances included:

Billy Aris with an A* in Maths, Distinction* in Media and an A in Business who has a place at Loughborough University to study Accounting and Financial Management.

Lewis Ault with an A* in Maths and 3 As in Business, Further Maths and Geography who has a place at the University of Warwick to study Global Sustainable Development and Business Studies.

Ben Aubrey with 3 A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and an A in Computing.  Ben has a place at the University of Bath to study Mathematics.

Harry Bowley with 2 A*s in Maths and Further Maths and 2 As in Computing and Physics who has a place at Lancaster University to study Computer Science.

James Chandler with a Distinction* in Engineering, 2 As in Chemistry and Maths and a B in Biology.

Jake Gaunt with 2 A*s in Maths and Further Maths and 2 As in Computing and Physics who has a place at the University of Bath to study Computer Science.

Olivia Gold with 3 As in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and a B in Geography who has a place at the University of Exeter to study Mechanical Engineering.

Mila Jefferies with A* in English Literature, A in Spanish and a B in Psychology who has a place at the University of Bath to study Modern Languages.

Daniel Lovick with 4 A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Computing who has a place at the University of Birmingham to study Computer Science.

Habiba Mahmood who has Distinction* in Health and Social Care, an A in Sociology and a B in Psychology.

Ella Millard who has an A* in Sociology, a Distinction* in Health and Social Care and an A in Psychology who has a place at the Bournemouth University to study Adult Nursing.

Flynn Queenan with 2 A*s in Maths and Further Maths and 2 As in Computing and Physics who has a place at the University of Cambridge to study Mathematics.

Dexter Salt who has 2 A*s in Biology and Maths and an A in Physics who has a place at the University of Exeter to study Biological Sciences.

Ella Staveley who has A* in Art and 2As in Biology and Religious Studies.

Kirsty Tidmus who has 2A*s in English Literature and History and an A in Maths and has a place at the University of Nottingham to study English.

Ed Truman with 4A*s in Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics who has a place at the University of Oxford to study Physics.

Ollie Walker with 2 A*s in Biology and Maths and 2 As in Chemistry and Further Maths who has a place at the University of Birmingham to study Dentistry.
